Toohulls started as a dream of a lifelong sailor and custom homebuilder, Ed Johnson. In the early 90s, he started building boats. The first effort was a 19' custom racer that was a scaled down version of the '92 America's Cup Kiwi boat, sans keel.

Having sold his Bristol 41, and hoping to begin cruising the Carribean again with more speed and room, Ed embarked on building the cat out of Douglas fir, glass, West sytem epoxy, and carbon/foam. The build started in the summer of 1994.
